"Room A Thousand Years Wide"/"HIV Baby" was rather unusual; it was released in 1990 on Sub Pop, after the band had already signed with A&M and released Louder Than Love. There were 5000 copies of the 7" pressed, the first 1500 on grape vinyl and the remaining 3500 on black. The black ones were sent out to Sub Pop Single Of The Month Club members, and the grape copies were used as promotional devices. The single is the first Soundgarden release featuring bassist Ben Shepherd. [AU: 243,666] According to Kim Thayil, "I wrote the middle and ending riff, but Chris wrote the lyrics and Ben came up with the title, which was based on me, because I don't like sharing other people's silverware, drinking out of other people's bottles or sharing cigarettes. I'm pretty uptight about that. Ben said to me, 'Wow, Kim, you're a total H.I.V baby!'" The song was rerecorded in 1993 for the Born To Choose compilation, with Scott Granlund adding a saxophone part.
